Can #89 limestone be used as the only material on a new driveway?
I wouldn't recommend it as a standalone on a new driveway. It's a finish stone, not a base stone. Start with crusher run at 4 to 6 inches deep, then apply #89 as a 1 to 2 inch topcoat for the best result.
Does #89 limestone shift or scatter on walkways?
Less than larger stone. The small size interlocks somewhat and stays reasonably stable under foot traffic. Some migration at the edges is normal, especially after heavy rain. Edging along the walkway sides keeps it contained.
Is #89 limestone the same as pea gravel?
No. Pea gravel is rounded and smooth. #89 limestone is angular and sharp-edged. The angular edges help it interlock and stay in place better than rounded pea gravel.
Will #89 limestone work as a mulch substitute around plants?
Yes, and it has some advantages. It doesn't decompose, won't attract termites, and doesn't float during heavy rain the way bark mulch does.
How do you keep weeds out of #89 limestone walkways?
Install weed fabric before the stone goes down. A layer of fabric under 2 to 3 inches of #89 limestone blocks most weed growth.
