What is the difference between mason sand and play sand?
Mason sand is screened and washed to a consistent grain size for mortar work. Play sand is also screened but typically processed to remove dust and is slightly coarser. You can use mason sand for sandboxes, but mason sand is what you spec for mortar and paver joints.
How much mason sand do I need for paver joints?
For 100 square feet of pavers with 1/4-inch joints, plan on about 1/4 cubic yard. We can confirm the exact amount when you call with your project dimensions.
Can mason sand be used for concrete?
Not as the primary aggregate. Concrete needs a coarser, sharper sand (concrete sand) for proper bonding with the cement paste. Mason sand is too fine and would weaken the mix.
Is mason sand the same as fine sand?
Mason sand is one type of fine sand, but not all fine sand is mason sand. Mason sand specifically meets the grading requirements for mortar work. Other fine sands may have different particle sizes or contain too much silt.
